MEANING

Am I Just Going Through the Motions?

“It’s not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something.”―Winston S. Churchill

It’s a question to be asked every time you notice that your heart isn’t in your work. Am I just going through the motions? What it means is that there’s been a disconnect between your actions and your passions, a dissonance.

Did you once have a dream you were pursuing but that is now been set it aside because it’s too much effort? Or it has become boring? Or feels meaningless?

It doesn’t have to be that way.

If this is where you’re at today, it may be time to shake your cage, break the locks, open the door and get back on track.

Be grateful.
Be wise.
Be open to new possibilities.
Make time to be.

BONUS TRACK

February was Black History Month. It was my intention to share the following poem a couple weeks ago. The truth is, however, that we really don’t need a special month to enjoy poetry by Langston Hughes, books by James Baldwin or music by Nina Simone. The poem here is W.E.B. Du Bois’s My Country ’Tis of Thee.

W.E.B. Du Bois was born in 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. He lived to be 95, so his life overlapped many of our own lives who are Boomers. Du Bois was a sociologist, historian, civil rights activist, author, writer and editor. He went to college in Berlin and at Harvard and according to Wikipedia was the first African American to earn a doctorate.

There were significant differences in the way Black leaders responded to. the repressive and unjust circumstances of the Jim Crow South, just as there is a lack of agreement today on many issues.

My Country ’Tis of Thee

by W.E.B. Du Bois

My country tis of thee,
Late land of slavery,
Of thee I sing.
Land where my father’s pride
Slept where my mother died,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring!
