As one who has written about these things, and has been in the auto industry more than two decades, I have paid close attention to trends, promises and problems with regard to both this issue and electric cars. The True Believers imagine that the advent of self-driving cars is very near, that it ought to be because humans are not safe behind a wheel much of the time.

All well and good, but as one who lives in Minnesota where treacherous road conditions exist half the year, where near white-out snowfall occurs on a regular basis, I find it had to believe that sensors are going to be able to read where the road edges are when all is blanketed in snow.

I’m still wondering how the insurance agencies and lawyers will work out the issues they will have to grapple with as well.

This article does a good job of bringing to light a range of issues that need to be more public.
