Dylan was influenced by the Beats and the folk scene, both rooted in an intellectual thoughtfulness, the latter noteworthy noteworthy for its being a voice for the underdog. Dylan opened the door to a more intellectual aspect to rock, which before him was primarily music to shuffle your feet to.

I bought into the values of the Hippie scene, but also was an observer of the self-centeredness of many and the failure to grasp that life is long and someone has to pay the bills.
