Good, thoughtful piece. When I was at the beginning of my writing career 40 yrs ago, one of the books I read was how the writer has to deepen themselves by reading all the influential books. It enables you to understand how they were influential. Mein Kampf, Communist Manifesto, Origin of Species, Bible, Freud. Whether in football, marketing or debate class, one must know what they are up against in any competition. (I wrote about this here.) https://medium.com/@ennyman/before-going-into-battle-we-must-know-wwaua-50d3aafe8f91
As a philosophy student (lifelong actually) I did not become 50 different people as I read 50 different philosophers. It would be silly if that happened. In fact, most of what we read has a worldview/philosophical underpinning that is assumed or expressively put forth.
All this to say, good points
