I have not read your toxic work places article, but my first thought as I read this was this. Sometimes it is not what we write about, but HOW we write about it that offends or makes a potential employer uncomfortable.

We also live in a world where employers are tying to minimize risk. There are many more HR issues to deal with today than in the past. They are not looking for more headaches. You were likely one of several candidates and they may have decided the other candidate was “safe” and the tone of your writing made someone feel you were higher risk.

Good luck finding the “home” where your writing will be most appreciated.
