I once read an article from the 1930s (which is somewhere in my possession but not accessible at the moment) written by a Harvard thinker that said it was impossible to get elected as president in the U.S. if one weren’t a Christian. The result is that politicians pay lip service to one creed while believing in another.

You say you are concerned “where this is heading” but it has already been there for a long time. It creates a political body in which no one can speak honestly about what they really believe, and most of the political apparatus — Dems and GOP — is is Machiavellian. The end result is a massive across-the-board cynicism amongst the body politic.

This is a bad metaphor, but it’s something like a pimple in which things seem to be coming to a head, and at some point something has to pop.
