It gives a lot of people a sense of meaning when their teams win. We have some innate sense of needing to feel like we belong to something bigger than ourselves. But in the grand scheme of things it really is pretty small.
It’s unbelievable what cities pay to keep a sports team in town. You could probably fund homes for all homeless in each city if the stadium were traded for housing…. food and medical included.
(That might be an overstatement but not by a lot.)
