My grandmother would have enjoyed this. She considered it an amazing century to be alive. Being born in 1905 the development of the automobile, the highway system, airplane travel and space travel were remarkable achievements. She and my grandfather were members of the Sky & Telescope Society in the 1950s in Cleveland and she was mocked by the president of that society for believing that we would one day walk on the moon. He said that no rocket would escape the gravitational pull of the earth and no human would survive going through the Van Allen Belts.
Less than two months later Sputnik proved the first assertion wrong. She had the privilege of seeing her other convictions come to pass as well. A great inspiration for me personally… and as I stated above, this is a story she would have enjoyed.
