My grandmother’s father owned a hardware store in West Virginia. She was one of six kids and I do not recall this flu epidemic ever being mentioned but when she was 13 the hardware store went out of business and she and the siblings all went to live with cousins for a year.
I’d always attributed this to the post-WWI recession, but now understand it was a combination double whammy, and here in Duluth a triple-whammy with the great fire.
Did these post-war hardships and the Spanish Flu contribute to the Chicago White Sox scandal (revisited in Field of Dreams)?
