The End of Something is the Beginning of Something New

Is life circular or is it something else? If we think in terms of the earth’s navigation around the sun it certainly gives the impression of being circular. Round and round we go, where we stop nobody knows other than that a year from now it will again be winter in the Northern Hemisphere and we’ll start another year afresh with a new calendar.

But if we think of life as a path, as Robert Frost penned in The Road Not Taken, then way goes on to way, and every fork in the road leads us to new vistas and often unanticipated experiences.

I like the way Frost attempts to discern what lies ahead should he take the other route. Alas, our vision is shrouded, and not simply from seeing what tomorrow’s tomorrows hold. Even the day ahead can surprise us, even as it opens right before our eyes, for “who can tell what a day may bring forth,” an ancient proverb declares.

“The End of Something” is the title of a Nick Adams story by Ernest Hemingway. You will find it in his first collection of stories titled In Our Time, a book that awakened me to the power of prose and contributed to my desire to become a writer.
