The first surprise for me was that I’d not even heard about it and when I took it out from our library I knew nothing about it. As soon as I saw that Buscemi and Michael Palin were in it I knew it would be a romp.

I’d read Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag and know that Westerners can’t imagine what it was really like. 10,000 Finnish Americans went back to the Soviet Union in the late 30’s, seduced by Soviet propaganda. I knew a woman whose parent went, and fortunately for her escaped. Many did not.
