The history of taxation follows the history of government… bigger and more bloated. When I put on too much weight it is unhealthy. I have to eat less, exercise more. Government keeps getting fatter and fatter.

You’re right that 95% tax rates are rare, and that’s an interesting observation to compare taxation to pricing of products: “What the market will bear.”

My only real reason for writing this was that the anecdote about the Rolling Stones in Keith Richards’ book caught my because it was identical to the song — here’s one for you, 19 for me.

It’s more or less a warning against getting carried away when the tides turn toward taxing the rich. (I am NOT one of these) We already DO have excessive varieties of taxation, including inheritance taxes, property taxes, sales taxes and more. Alas…
