The Moment We Realize It Will Never Be the Same

“Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.” — John Lennon

Innocence Lost

We try. We try to convince ourselves
that it’s not over yet.
We wrap our minds in a fog
and ignore
what is evident to all.

We’re done.
Overbaked in the sun.
Riddled with confusion

we turn a corner,
coming face-to-face
with our invented delusions.

Our whole scheme shivers,
delivering the wham-bang punch
that lays us flat.

If only it were that easy.

Burying our heads in the sand,
we smother our minds with lies

and, like Oedipus, poke out our eyes
to more easily pretend
we cannot see.
