“Still Life with Black Cube” — Oil painting by Frank Baker Holmes

“I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.”

The painting above could originally be found at the River Gallery in Narrowsburg, New York. (It’s sold now.) The gallery features a lot of very good work.

I met artist when in college in the early 70’s. Frank Holmes was one of the painting instructors at Ohio University before he being awarded a Prix de Rome in 1973.

Still Life with Black Cube is appriximately 11.5 x18 inches.

Holmes stated that he doesn’t have the vaguest notion where the ideas — compositional or otherwise — came from. Most of the elements have been recurring themes in his work: the apple, the hardwood floor, the carpet, the Polaroid picture, the sky.

At the center of all is a black cube. What can it mean?
